1 — Van Wickle Gates
The Van Wickle Gates at the top of College Hill offer a glimpse of the Providence skyline and inspire reflection on Brown’s history. Founded in 1764, Brown is the third oldest college in New England and seventh oldest in the nation. Since colonial times, both Rhode Island and the University have been symbols of religious freedom. In keeping with tradition, the main Van Wickle Gate is only opened twice per year: once for the entering class as they begin their studies at Brown; and once again when graduates leave their college years behind.
