"The thing about Brown that is really wonderful is that it is a unique blend of a liberal arts college and a research University, and I think it’s the only institution of its kind in the world.
Some classes have only three students, and offer the true liberal arts experience of intense, intimate, debate and discussion with fellow students and professors. Some classes are large lectures. Either, or both, could be taught by a Nobel-prize-winning scholar, or, incidentally, me! But I’m not a Nobel winning scholar ... not yet!
But I don’t think research excellence, or teaching, or class size, should be the reason you pick Brown, though these are all wonderful aspects of life here.
I think the absolutely best thing about Brown is its extraordinary students, who come from all over the world, and have a particular passion for making the world a better place, and whose scholarly motivations are rarely limited to mere classroom achievements.
Come, because being here will change how you look at the world, and at yourself. And I hope you’ll take one of my classes on the modern history of the Middle East, which will encourage you to do both!"

Class: Understanding the Middle East: 1800s to the Present
